Massage Therapy Classes

Massage Therapy Courses

Learning massage therapy is a unique experience because it includes both theoretical knowledge and practical application. As a student in the comprehensive massage therapy program at First Institute, your education will include traditional classroom and hands-on learning.

The traditional classroom courses are designed to give you the background in how the body works. These classes are taught at approximately the same level that you would see in college courses. The classes you will take include:

Anatomy – Study of muscle and bone structure of the human body is important to a massage therapist

Kinesiology – Study of the principles of mechanics and anatomy in relation to human movement

Physiology – Study of the function of body parts

The practical application of your knowledge is just as important. In addition to helping you get hands-on experience, your study of the specific modalities of massage can help you become a massage therapist who is well-rounded and help you pick a specific area in which you would like to work. The classes include:

Aromatherapy – The use of essential oils to relax and heal the body and mind. Essential oils are 100 percent natural, highly concentrated plant essences.

Reflexology – Type of massage used to relieve tension and treat illness, based on the theory that there are reflex points on the feet, hands, and head linked to every part of the body.

Swedish Massage – Developed in Sweden (hence the name) to promote relaxation of the entire body, this is the most common type of massage.

Sports Massage – Designed to help athletes of all calibers, sports massage therapy focuses on areas of the body that may be stressed from repetitive movements.
