Not-So-Typical Day as a Massage Therapist

There really isn’t a “typical day” as a massage therapist, because most massage therapists have very flexible schedules. In fact, if you own your own practice it is likely that you will set your hours based on what fits best with your schedule. Other factors that vary among massage therapists are specialties, willingness to travel to offer your services, and availability of resources. However, we won’t get into all of those variations right now; instead we will focus on what a massage therapist with a privately owned studio would be like.

The day will start mid-morning when you will prepare the massage rooms and tables for the day, with linens, oils, candles, and music. Most massage therapists only work in their office when they know they have clients scheduled. Because of this flexibility it is possible that one day you will have 2 clients and the next 6-7 clients.

After you have made the room preparations and the first client arrives for their appointment, you will greet them and may offer water or hot tea to soothe them while you double-check the room and notes from previous visits to make sure that you will cover their specific requests during the massage. You will then take their history and perform the massage session.

As the day continues and upon completion of each session you will replace the linens and replenish any oils, lotions, or creams that may be running low; and don’t forget to wash your hands! After you have seen all your clients for the day, you will start a load of laundry for all the towels and linens used throughout the day. Depending on your payment policy most clients will pay for services at the time they are received, so you will balance your register at the end of the day to ensure the right payment amounts before going to the bank.

As you can see, there can be many different experiences on a day-to-day basis as a massage therapist; however, the profession as a whole is very relaxed and flexible.
