First Institute’s Dental Assisting program teaches students a comprehensive set of skills essential for a successful career in dental assisting. The curriculum includes:

Clinical skills

The clinical skills First Institute students will learn include taking and developing dental x-rays, preparing and sterilizing instruments and equipment, applying fluoride treatments, taking dental impressions and pouring models, and assisting with common dental procedures.

Administrative skills

As a student in the First Institute Dental Assisting program, you’ll learn how to handle administrative tasks like scheduling appointments, managing patient records, and processing billing and insurance claims.

Patient care and communication

Dental assistants play an important role in preparing patients for treatments, educating patients on oral hygiene, and providing comfort and reassurance during procedures.

Dental anatomy and terminology

Students will gain an understanding of tooth structure and the oral cavity and master dental-specific vocabulary so that they can effectively communicate with both colleagues and patients.

Laboratory skills

You’ll learn things like mixing dental materials, creating temporary crowns, and assisting with laboratory procedures.

Organizational skills

The Dental Assisting program will help you learn to manage your time effectively, keep your workspace organized, and pay attention to details – skills that will serve you well no matter where your career takes you.

These essential skills are taught through a combination of classroom instruction, hands-on laboratory practice, and real-world experience gained during the program’s externship component. Ready to begin training for this in-demand career? Apply to our Dental Assisting program today!
