Why demand for medical assistants is rising

There are several reasons why the BLS expects the need for qualified medical assistants to increase steadily for the foreseeable future. Overall, experts project the health care industry to grow in most positions over the next decade.

Demographic

Baby Boomers are the biggest demographic segment of the American population. Consequently, as they age they will spur demand for preventive medical services provided by physicians. Practices will hire more assistants to perform routine administrative and clinical duties, allowing nurses and physicians to see more patients.

Legal

Federal health legislation – the Affordable Care Act – requires U.S. residents to purchase health insurance. It has expanded the number of patients who have access to health insurance, and increased the number of visits and procedures by the tens of millions.

Technology

Practices are switching to electronic health records (EHRs). For this reason, medical assistants need training in EHR computer software, maintaining data security, and performing electronic data analysis.

Expansion

Primary care is a steadily growing sector of the health care industry, and a high percentage of medical assistants work in that sector. In addition, there are an increasing number of group practices, clinics, and other healthcare facilities that need medical assistants.
