Medical Assisting Customer Service
April 27, 2015
Changes are coming to the medical field in the coming years – ones that will keep every member of the medical team busy. As a result, providing customer service to patients will be more important than ever. That’s where the role of a medical assistant can make each client’s experience much better.
The number of visits to health care providers is increasing for several reasons. First, the average age of Americans is rising, which spurs demand for preventive medical services. Second, the number of group practices, clinics, and other healthcare facilities will continue to increase. And third, legislation has expanded the number of patients who have access to health insurance, increasing patient access to medical care.
Customer Service Requires Key Skills
Attention to Detail
Physicians and insurance companies rely on accuracy; for that reason, medical assistants have to be precise when taking vital signs and talking to patients about treatment. As well, you need to be accurate and complete when recording patient information.
Attitude
The ability to handle staff and patients with a smile is important, and sometimes difficult. Fortunately, a good attitude goes a long way with patients and staff alike.
Communication
Being able to effectively communicate is essential, especially when explaining procedures or re-explaining what the doctor said to help a patient better understand is a common occurrence.
Compassion
In the health care industry, your customers are dealing with illness, injury or pain. In these cases, some empathy for their situation can go a long way towards helping their situation.
Organizational skills
Because medical assistants deal with doctors, nurses, administrative staff and patients, it is essential to have effective time management skills and the ability to prioritize tasks to be efficient as possible.
Patience
With the hustle and bustle of a busy office, it is essential to practice patience with the staff and patients.
Phone skills
When a patient is ill and must make the call to the physician’s office, the patient’s first contact is typically with the Medical Assistant.
Medical offices are in the business of providing diagnosis and treatment of patients, which makes them a business just like any other. That’s why understanding that patients are your customers and doing your best to meet their needs is important to maintaining their loyalty.
